MJ Hibbett - Greatest Hits
Hi, basically this is like that thing Steve Lamacq does, but I bet he doesn't go to the trouble of ripping the MP3 files off demo albums he gets sent, then putting them online, then contacting the artist to see if they've got any problem with that.

Anyway, that's what I've done with the new long-player from MJ Hibbett And The Validators, probably best-known for their paean to 8-bit '80s home computing, Hey Hey 16K (lyrics on the right). All very amusing you might think, but might there be more to this exciting new act than just droll reminiscing about long-obsolete memory restrictions?

And, you know, I discovered that there was.

Payday Is The Best Day - display lyrics
Probably the closest to "Hey Hey 16K" in both jaunty tune and lyrical content, with a "Nazis" rhyme that even the Manic Street Preachers, in their thought-provoking "NatWest - Barclays - Midland - Lloyds", never dared attempt.

If You're Too Turned On - display lyrics
Same kind of catchy melody, slightly more "adult" subject-matter. Substitute your own favourites in the chorus if required.

Born With The Century - display lyrics
A change of pace and shift of tone for this peculiarly effective compression of 100 years into 4 minutes 27 seconds. Hibbett says it's semi-inspired by Pulp's "Help The Aged" but I thought I heard Billy Bragg's Between The Wars in there as well.

Say It With Words - display lyrics
Brief but charming ballad that may be a thinly-veiled attack on Elton John's atrocious Your Song (among other things). Has a Cake-like trumpet solo, and (almost as entertainingly) uses the phrase "a range of fonts".

The Pebble And The Boulder - display lyrics
And, finally, an ambient rock-out overpoweringly reminscent of the sort of thing the Wonderstuff used to put at the ends of their albums.

Well, that's your lot - you seem to be able to buy the album (of which less than maybe a third appears here) quite cheaply if you thirst for more. Also, MJ's page itself is worth a look, if only for the amusing 404 page.
